KID-FRIENDLY DESIGN DONE RIGHT: TIPS FOR A STYLISH, PRACTICAL HOME

As a designer, I get this question all the time: "Can you make sure your designs are durable enough for kids?" And while I completely understand the concern, the truth is, creating a beautiful, functional home that can handle kids (and all the mess that comes with them) is totally possible. Trust me, I live it every day. As a mom of two, who's been through the chaos of snack time, playtime, and the endless laundry, I know how important it is to have a home that looks great and works well for your family's needs. And let me tell you—it’s all about blending style with durability. Here are my top tips for making your home kid-friendly without compromising on design.....

  1. Performance Fabrics Are Your Best Friend

It’s a common concern: how can you have light furniture and kids? Well, the good news is you can—without sacrificing style or durability. The secret is choosing the right performance fabric. I recommend high-quality fabrics that are designed to withstand spills, stains, and everyday wear and tear. Many of my favourite retailers, like Crate & Barrel and EQ3, offer these performance options, which come in a range of colours and textures. So, if you love the look of light, airy sofas or chairs, don't hesitate to go for it. With the right fabric, you can have the best of both worlds: a fresh, bright look and furniture that stands up to whatever your kids throw at it (literally).

  2. Choose Durable Finishes

When designing for kids, durability is key—especially when it comes to finishes. For walls, I recommend opting for an eggshell or satin finish. Both finishes are easy to wipe down without leaving streaks or spots, as a glossy finish would. As for countertops, quartz and porcelain are excellent choices. Both materials are durable, low-maintenance, and resistant to stains and scratches, making them perfect for handling everyday wear and tear. They come in a wide variety of styles, so you won’t have to sacrifice looks for practicality.

  3. Opt for Rounded Edges

Okay, this one’s simple but important: rounded edges. Whether it's on a coffee table, dining chairs, or shelving units, rounded edges keep kids safe. It’s easy to overlook this detail, but the last thing you want is a sharp corner at the perfect height for a toddler’s forehead. Plus, rounded edges can make a room feel softer and more inviting. It's a win-win.

  4. Storage is Key

Kids bring stuff—toys, books, shoes, school projects, you name it. Having smart storage solutions is crucial to keeping your home feeling organized and functional. And here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to look like a storage unit either. Think built-in cabinets, stylish baskets, or even storage ottomans that double as seating. For a coffee table, look for one that can quickly transform into a toy storage spot. It’s perfect for those times when guests pop over unexpectedly, and you need to clear the clutter fast. Keeping the mess at bay without sacrificing style is totally achievable.

  5. Rugs That Can Take It

If you’re anything like me, a rug is one of the first things you’ll use to add warmth and personality to a room. But, with kids, you need a rug that can handle some serious wear. Wool rugs are naturally stain-resistant, and they hold up really well over time. But if you’ve got a high-traffic area (like a playroom or living room), choose rugs with a busier pattern and lower pile. This type of rug is more forgiving should a spill occur, and the pattern can hide dirt and stains better than a solid one. Plus, they’re easier to clean and still stylish.

  6. Non-Slip Flooring

Safety is always a top priority, especially with kids around. Non-slip surfaces are essential for preventing falls. For high-traffic areas, like a staircase, I recommend incorporating a stair runner. Stair runners not only add warmth and texture but also provide extra grip, making stairs safer for kids (and adults!). They help prevent slips and falls, especially when stairs are slippery or worn. Additionally, areas with high-polish tile can become very slippery, especially when wet, so consider opting for tiles with a more textured surface or adding rugs in key areas to improve traction.
